Fuerteventura is one of the seven main Canary Islands of Spain in the Atlantic Ocean. It is located at a distance of about 100 kilometres from the African country, Morocco. The island gets 3,000 hours of sunshine a year and is one of the major holiday destinations of Spain. In 1965, the very first hotel on this island was built and it was followed by the construction of El Matorral Airport or Fuerteventura Airport. This marked the beginning of a new era for tourism on the island. In 2009, it was declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO.

One of the most popular places worth exploring during your Fuerteventura holidays is Betancuria, the former capital of the island. This town has been named after a French explorer called Jean de Bethencourt who founded it in the early 15th century along with a knight and crusader known as Gadifer de La Salle. It was destroyed by a pirate named Jaban in the late 16th century. However, it was rebuilt by the locals of the town and was made the capital of the island until 1834. Today, the economy of this town mainly runs on tourism-related activities. While getting around in this town, you can shop for souvenirs and taste some local delicacies in any of its restaurants or cafes.

Don't miss the dunes of Corralejo, a town located on the northern tip of Fuerteventura. These 11-kilometre-long dunes are a part of the Corralejo Natural Park. You'll enjoy the serenity of the clean and well-maintained coastline while exploring these dunes. This coastline is washed by the crystal-clear waters of the Atlantic, which is one of the reasons for its spotless appearance. The Fuerteventura Kite Festival and some musical concerts are organised on the beach area by Corralejo's municipality. Equipment rentals are also available nearby if you wish to indulge in surfing or any of the other water sports.

Ajuy Caves is one of the intriguing places you'll get to visit on this Spanish island. They are located on the western coast in a small village called Ajuy. You can get to these caves by taking a small coastal path from the centre of the village. These caves were used as hideouts by the pirates. During your visit to these caves, you can also explore a famous shipwreck of the American Star, which lies on the Playa de Garcey Beach. It was washed ashore during a severe storm that had hit this part of the world in 1994.

El Cotillo is a charming village you'd like to visit during your holiday spent on this island. It is situated on the northern parts of Fuerteventura and is gradually becoming a popular destination for day trips. Although it is a small village, you can find some excellent seafood restaurants to pamper your taste buds. The popularity of this village can be attributed to La Concha Beach. The road that leads to this beach would also allow you to explore the El Cotillo Lighthouse. Located next to this lighthouse is El Museo de la Pesca, which is a small but interesting fishermen's museum.
